On Nov. 11, 2010, Foreign Economic Cooperation Office Ministry of Environmental Protection of the People’s Republic of China organized a workshop under “Environmentally Sound Management and Disposal of POPs Waste” in Kunming, Yunnan Province. Project progress, implementation plan, implementation mode, main activities, and progress timeline were discussed in detail. Participants agreed on the mode of implementing the project with actions that suit local circumstances and raised constructive suggestions on how to accelerate POPs waste disposal and enhance POPs waste management.
This workshop was jointly organized by Yunnan Environmental Protection Bureau. More than 30 representatives working in solid waste management sector from provinces such as Hebei, Shandong, Jiangsu, Henan, Hubei, Hunan, Sichuan and Chongqing Municipality were invited. Mr. Yu Lifeng, Deputy Director General of FECO addressed the meeting.
The project will adopt technologies which are up to Stockholm Convention standards for the disposal of 10,000 tons of POPs waste and 1,000 tons of dioxin-containing fly ash. In the meantime, enabling activities will be conducted to train management personnel and workers. The implementation of the project will lend strong financial and technical support to the aim of disposing all identified POPs pesticide waste by the end of 12th Five-Year Plan.(thanslated by Pan Jie) |
