At the end of April 2013, 2013 Annual Meeting on Demonstration Activities was held in Wuhan for GEF-funded Project for Environmentally Sustainable Management of Medical Waste in China (hereinafter referred to as the Project), which was organized by Foreign Economic Cooperation Office, MEP and National Institute of Hospital Administration, and co-organized by Environmental Management of Solid Waste in China of Hubei Environmental Protection Bureau. The workshop was attended by over 50 delegates from environmental protection/health departments, medical waste disposal units, demonstration hospitals and project expert panel of the demonstration provinces/cities (Changchun City, Jilin Province; Nanchang City, Jiangxi Province; Xinxiang City, Henan Province; Xiaogan City, Hubei Province; Yiyang City, Hunan Province and Pingliang City, Gansu Province).
The workshop introduced the Project progress, reported and discussed existing hot issues in segregation of medical waste, connection between segregation and disposal, as well as charging and pricing policies, communicated the progress and experiences in the construction of integrated medical waste management demonstration cities, best environmental practices (BEP) demonstration in medical institutions, medical waste treatment and disposal facilities BAT/BEP demonstration, and conducted training on the preparation and applications for integrated management and synergized disposal demonstration provinces of medical waste. In addition, it also carried out targeted discussions and arrangements on the follow-up work of various activities.
The workshop provided a platform for exchange and communication among the parties involved in the demonstration activities of the project, consolidated the current demonstration achievements of the Project and defined the focus of follow-up work, which created conditions for the upcoming activities in demonstration provinces on the basis of work in the demonstration cities, and played an important role in promoting continuous and in-depth implementation of the project demonstration activities.
