GEF-funded demonstration project of POPs waste disposal in China implemented by the Foreign Economic Cooperation Office, the Ministry of Environmental Protection (FECO-MEP) supported to finish the evaluation for historical POPs waste and preliminary investigation of POPs contaminated site in Hunan province. According to the work plan, with the cooperation and support among relevant parties including FECO-MEP and Environmental Protection authorities at all level of Hunan province and the executing institution, the activity started in January and finished in June, 2014. An appraisal meeting for the outcome of investigation organized by FECO-MEP was convened on June 19 2014 in Beijing.
The executing institution made a presentation at this meeting, which included site investigation, risk assessment, suggestion for the next period, etc. Based on the actual situation, these contaminated sites were of long history, serious pollution and complex surrounding environment. All experts agreed that this investigation followed International standard practices and the result was reliable. In addition, the suggestions made were reasonable and feasible, which could provide an effective technological support for the following waste disposal and detailed investigation for the site. Meanwhile, the investigation and evaluation could provide demonstration experience for other relevant site investigation. As the international implementing agency, UNIDO was highly commented on the investigation and evaluation work.
