To deepen China-Brazil cooperation in the field of ecology and environment, from May 21 to 22, the Foreign Environmental Cooperation Center of the Ministry of Ecology and Environment, together with the World Resources Institute, conducted a joint study visit in the State of Pará, Brazil. The visit focused on sustainable ecosystem management and green value chain cooperation through meetings, exchanges and field visits.
On May 21, the delegation visited the Environmental Training and Capacity Building Center of the Pará State Secretariat for Environment and Sustainability, as well as the Federation of Agriculture and Livestock of Pará. At the Pará State Secretariat for Environment and Sustainability, the Brazilian side introduced Pará’s practices in applying digital tools to land-use identification, forest change monitoring, environmental compliance management, and traceability of agricultural and livestock products, with a focus on the TerraClass land-use and land-cover change monitoring platform and the SeloVerde platform. The two sides exchanged views on digital technologies for ecological and environmental governance, coordinated management of forest conservation and agricultural production, and green supply chain development.
At the Federation of Agriculture and Livestock of Pará, the delegation was briefed on agricultural development in Pará, services for rural producers, and the low-carbon and sustainable transformation of agriculture and livestock. The delegation also learned about the federation’s work in supporting producer capacity building, promoting standardized agricultural operations, and advancing the green transformation of agricultural supply chains.
On May 22, the delegation conducted field visits to an oil palm nursery and plantation, where it learned about Brazil’s experience in agroecological zoning, native vegetation conservation, riparian zone protection, scientific and technological research, and the participation of family farmers in the palm oil industry. The delegation also exchanged views with company representatives on sustainable management of rainforest ecosystems, biodiversity conservation, and green supply chain development between China and Brazil.
The delegation also visited local practices related to sustainable ecosystem management and the improvement of community livelihoods. The visit focused on how local communities combine agroecological cultivation with specialty product processing, exploring a development model of “living in harmony with the forest.” Through optimized planting structures, solar energy use, and rainwater recycling, local communities have enhanced climate resilience. These practices provide useful references for promoting sustainable agricultural trade between China and Brazil, strengthening exchanges on climate resilience, and advancing cooperation on ecological value transformation.
The study visit aimed to implement the work plan of the Subcommittee on Environmental and Climate Change of China-Brazil High Level Coordination and Cooperation Commission (COSBAN). It laid a solid foundation for the two sides to carry out practical cooperation in green value chains, ecological product value realization, natural capital and sustainable finance, ecosystem conservation and restoration, and capacity building.
